Answer by Tom B if you don’t know where it’s located it could be a good thing! whats your time and eminent frustration worth? my times worth $ 100 per hr, takes about 1/2 hr, if that, $ 100 for the starter, and I do it right the first time. with no frustration, might even sneak in a donut or 2, no charge!

Question by : Can a faulty starter solenoid on my 1982 honda cm450c be the cause of my bike’s lights not coming on?
It won’t start using the start button. I have to jump it at the starter solenoid while the key is in the ignition. I would get a new one, but I’m not entirely sure if it’s the solenoid or the starting switch. Is there any way I can trouble shoot this without having to take apart all the wiring?

Answer by Marble Yes get a 2nd battery and hook wires to the leads. Then supply power and ground to the smaller electrical connections on the solenoid. You should hear and feel a loud click. If it clicks right away then it is probably a good solenoid, to be extra sure you can run a continuity test through the larger leads (w/power supplied to the smaller leads) and see if there is connection. If you dont hear a click or there is no connection, your solenoid is probably bad.

Answer by 360ci There should be an idler pulley. It’s not connected to anything…
Get a socket set and the right sized socket and latch it onto the bolt in the center of the idler pulley. Pull the pulley down slightly and you can change it out. I haven’t heard of a slack adjuster… chances are good that if the belt is squealing or causing other problems then it should be replaced. The belts are reinforced but over time (and lots of heat) they can stretch slightly.

Answer by Pete K passenger side at the rear bottom of the engine. remove negatie battery lead. remove two bolts holding starter in place there might be an additional bracket towards the front holding starter to engine block. drop starter down a bit and unhook electrical leads. reverse for install. you may have to remove other parts for acces being a 4×4

Answer by Somethingtotry Volvos (particularly the newer ones) are very difficult to work on. Everything requires a special tool and even getting to some of the areas are impossible without removing other parts. Many independent shops will not touch Volvos for that very reason.
You may be able to replace alternator, thermostat, and brakes are fairly easy, but water pump, timing belt, starter and most everything else is a true pain. Volvos are not for the shade tree mechanic unless you are willing to invest in the tools and especially the time.

Question by : Why won’t my 1996 GMC Jimmy start?
I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 V6. The battery is charged. When I turn the key to the start position it completely blacks out, key buzzer and all. Is it still possible that it is the starter solenoid shorting out even though it doesn’t act like the electricity is making it that far.

Question by Chase N: 1991 Toyota MR2 won’t start?
When I put keys into ignition, the battery lights up all the lights, but the car won’t start. I re try about 40-50 times, then it starts. Then I drive around and each time I re-start the car, it starts with no problem. This non-start only happens when I let the car sits for more than a day. I just changed the fuel pump and filter so that’s not the problem, and battery is strong. I have a 91 non turbo Mr2. I read that it could be the starter solenoid? or fuse? please help.
Cactijoe, as mentioned, I just had my fuel pump replaced. There is no sound or crank when I turn the key.

This sounds like a fuel pump that’s crapping out on you. You can have this checked with a fuel pressure gauge for cheap.
