There should be an idler pulley. It’s not connected to anything…

Get a socket set and the right sized socket and latch it onto the bolt in the center of the idler pulley. Pull the pulley down slightly and you can change it out. I haven’t heard of a slack adjuster… chances are good that if the belt is squealing or causing other problems then it should be replaced. The belts are reinforced but over time (and lots of heat) they can stretch slightly.

passenger side at the rear bottom of the engine. remove negatie battery lead. remove two bolts holding starter in place there might be an additional bracket towards the front holding starter to engine block. drop starter down a bit and unhook electrical leads. reverse for install. you may have to remove other parts for acces being a 4×4

I want to know if I buy a later year volvo s40 if the average guy can replace a bad alternator, starter, timing belt, thermostat, brakes, fuel filter, water pump or would I have to take this car to the mechanic for that?

Volvos (particularly the newer ones) are very difficult to work on. Everything requires a special tool and even getting to some of the areas are impossible without removing other parts. Many independent shops will not touch Volvos for that very reason.

You may be able to replace alternator, thermostat, and brakes are fairly easy, but water pump, timing belt, starter and most everything else is a true pain. Volvos are not for the shade tree mechanic unless you are willing to invest in the tools and especially the time.

Did a shop replace/did they replace the alternator? I’d go back and get it checked up if the alternator is still good. Or just take it to Autozone and they can and see if your charging system is okay and it’s free. Or your battery is just going bad and not holding a charge. Good Luck!

The timing went out on it and was replaced. I just put a starter in it. It has no compression in any cylinders. It sounds like the motor is just turning but not firing at all. I checked spark, and there is next to nothing spark.(turn the engine over every second i see a spark) Anyone have any idea what it could be??

the valves are bent and the pistons are likely damaged.. this is what happens when you wait for the timing belt to break..it is done.. stick a fork in it.. sell it for scrap..

It is kind of behind the cross over exhaust pipe. Disconnect the battery ground first. Craw under ther after placing the car on jack stands not the tire changing jack to unstable to be safe it is held on with 2 9/16 long bolts and two wires 1/2 inch nut and 5/16 bolt and make sure of the size of your engine when exchanging your starter for a new remanufactured one. There may be shims under the starter you will reuse them. The starter nose and number if teeth on starter drive is very important. They have to match exactly before the exchange.

That is a very hard question to answer. One of the biggest things that are hard on starters is starting with a low battery.
Electrical motors don’t like running on low power. There is no set number of times you can use a starter until it fails so all you can do is help prevent it.
